ALBUMEN AND POP PRINTING
Contact printing processes that date back to the mid 19th century. Albumen prints are made by hand-coating and contact printed under a UV light-source. Prints are then toned to produce rich, purplish blacks and finely detailed highlights. Albumen prints are capable of rendering a spectacular range of tones and detail, and are considered by many to be the pinnacle of silver-based printing processes - especially when made from wet-collodion glass plate negatives. Printing-out paper is a similar process, which uses pre-sensitized, gelatin coated paper that can produce a wide range of tones using different formulas. In this two-day hands on workshop, learn the chemistry and techniques behind these printing methods from beginning to end. We’ll discuss how processing solutions are prepared, demonstrate coating paper, exposure, processing, and toning of prints.
